Mecca Bingo owners Rank Group have received near 60 million Pounds in VAT returns from “Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs” after a ruling from a VAT and Duties tribunal. Mecca Bingo hd been overpaying the VAT for five-and-a-half years, between January 2003 and June 2008. The return comes as a welcome boost for Rank Group.

Although it is a very positive uotcome for Rank, it will be offset by gross profits tax and other costs. On other hand, the HRMC has appealed the ruling and the appeal will be heard by the High Court in 2009.

A spokesperson for Rank said regardin the matter: “The repayment will be used to reduce the group’s net debt and will have no impact on the size of Rank’s existing banking facilities that will remain committed until 2012."
